» Microsoft Announces Windows Mobile 6.1
Windows Mobile is improving smartphones to better meet people’s rapidly expanding work and personal needs, Microsoft Corp. today announced. At CTIA Wireless 2008, the company unveiled the newest version of Internet Explorer Mobile, which adds desktop-grade Web browsing to Windows Mobile phones. In addition, Microsoft announced Windows Mobile 6.1, an update for its Windows Mobile software that includes new time-saving features, easier phone navigation and management, and increased security safeguards. “People want a single phone that’s flexible enough to meet their needs throughout their day, whether it’s connecting to work or your everyday life,” said Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. “The innovations we’ve added to our Windows Mobile software ultimately make it easier to manage your world.” “Microsoft is taking the necessary steps to broaden its consumer appeal while also addressing the complex mobile needs of the enterprise,” said Ben Bajarin, analyst with Creative Strategies. “Internet Explorer Mobile and Windows Mobile 6.1 demonstrate Microsoft’s ability to harness its technologies to bring tangible innovations and benefits to customers and partners.” Read more inside and here for the review: |
» Spb Mobile Shell. Second edition Review
"Lately I’ve been stumbling upon a lot of topics on installing one application on a multitude of devices. The policy of Spb Software House in this matter seems to be the most reasonable – the registration key they issue once you purchase the product may be used on as many devices as you want, on top of that updates to the current version are free, while a new version is available with a 50% rebate to all registered users. But that’s not all: upgrade to a new version that takes place in less than 90 days since the purchase of the previous application’s release is absolutely free. By the way, another way to approach the problem of upgrading your software is Apple with its firmware updates for the iPod Touch (which are not free), or developers whose applications are locked on your device’s hardware identifier or something else. Sometimes transferring programs of the latter type can be done after getting in touch with the developer’s support service, but these cases are rather exceptions from the rule." Read more here:

» Skyfire Mobile Web Browser Review
"A few weeks ago, I wrote an editorial commenting on how horrible browsing the Web is on most mobile devices. Amazingly, there's already a solution for this problem, at least for some users. It's called Skyfire, and it is far and away the best web browser for Windows Mobile I've ever seen. This application offers just about all the features you need to access "Web 2.0" sites, like dynamic Flash, advanced Ajax, and Java. It's good enough that your main limitation in browsing is going to be the size and resolution of your smartphone's screen, and Skyfire is even able to compensate for that.I was able to spend some time with an early beta, and I found I genuinely enjoyed putting this application through its paces.Internet Explorer Mobile is a decent web browser. Limited, but decent. So if Skyfire is going to be worth our time, it's going to have to be able to do things the default Windows Mobile browser can't. That's why as soon as I loaded it on an AT&T Tilt I went straight to YouTube.Skyfire acts generally like the iPhone browser. When you open a site, what you see is it shrunk down to fit on your smartphone's display. You can then tap on the screen to zoom in on sections of the page. When I went to YouTube, what I saw was the full site, not a stripped down version. I selected a video and the page opened, and the video immediately began to play, with full motion and sound." Read more here:

» iPhone Outsells Windows Mobile!
"Apple has found its way into yet another market and this time with mobile phones. The iPhone is really a device that you either love or hate but according to iPhone nano more people love it than hate it. As you can see from the graph above iPhone has managed to secure the number 2 spot for smart phone platforms. This means that the iPhone has sold more phones than all phones using Windows Mobile combined, sitting right behind Blackberry. Apple already owns the market for PMPs and once they update the iPhone with things like GPS they might very well own the market for mobile phones as well." via mobilewhack.com

» CrazySoft's The Final Battle review at palmaddict!
"Over the years, I have purchased several of CrazySoft’s products. CrazySoft has a reputation for producing some of the most entertaining, quality puzzle, action and adventure games for PDA’s of various cross-platforms. Their latest addition, The Final Battle, is their most ambitious entry into the PDA gaming market. The Final Battle is a quest-adventure where you begin the game having awakened in a prison. However, you are stricken with amnesia and don’t know who you are, much less how you ended up in jail. The game requires that you be on top of your mental game as it entails the use of your cognitive as well as your best, deductive skills. However, fans of “Lost in the Pyramid” know that the journey is a light-hearted one as characters are encouraged along by the great humorous interactions that prods game-players onward! » Review: Finding Your Way With TeleNav 5.2
"The first thing to explain about TeleNav is that it is primarily distributed through carriers as a monthly service fee. Currently, TeleNav is available for selected PDAPhone from AT&T Wireless, Alltel, Rogers, SouthernLINC, Sprint-Nextel, and Verizon Wireless. It is also also developed and made available in device specific versions. They will not let you sign up with one Windows Mobile device, just because its available on another Windows Mobile device. They want to customize and test it on each individual model device. This is good, but could delay availability for newer PDAPhones. There was a bit of a lag before they released V5.2 for the Mogul, while through testing a number of users found that V4 for the PPC-6700 worked reasonably well on the Mogul. Aside from the monthly rental fee, there is a significant difference in how TeleNav works when compared to other purchased nagivation applications. With most other programs, you must load all of the maps that you intend to load onto your PDAPhone. With some programs like iGuidance, they have you load all the US maps on at one time, so its easy to do, but takes up a significant amount of your microSD card. For other programs like Mapopolis, you have to select the maps you are going to use by state and county, and load them before a trip. None of this is done with TeleNav... there are no maps ever resident on your PDAPhone. TeleNav is a client/server type application. You select where you want to go, and it accesses a large server and pulls the data for the trip or location back to your device for display. On the one hand, this is bad because you need a data connection to use TeleNav. But on the other hand it is good because the maps are always updated, AND, the points of interest and location search capability is much more powerful using a server than what you can do on your PDAPhone. I will now go over some of the basic functions of TeleNav. " Read this BIG review here:

» Symbian S60 Active Standby vs Win Mobile 6 Today Screen
"To start things off let’s take a look at the first thing you see when you pick up any device - the home screen. We’re all familiar with Active Standby on S60 and we can probably all agree that it’s extremely limited. Beyond the basics, Nseries devices offer a few shortcuts along with calendar entries, tasks and the WLAN wizard on WiFi-enabled devices. With the Eseries you get a few more options such as the Active Standby mailbox which displays the two most recent emails in one mailbox and a few other configurable choices." » Spb Software House's Spb Brain Evolution Review
" The application uses the games to encourage the player's mind to think quickly and clearly. Some games, such as Balltracker, require strategy and planning, while others, like Arithmetics, require the player to solve a problem has quickly as possible. The game begins by creating a profile of the player's name and completing a diagnostic test called a Brain Marking to determine the initial brain status, which is labeled as Child, Schoolboy, Student, Intern, etc. After the initial status is determined, the player is introduced to 4 of the 10 games, 2 of which must be played to complete a day's "Brain Training." Each game's difficulty increases with consistent play. The difficulty of each game is tracked on a bar underneath the game's name where the last and best results. As the player moves up in difficulty, the more games are unlocked to play. As more games are unlocked, the number of games required to complete each Brain Training is increased. To judge the player's progress, he must complete another Brain Marking. Progress is tracked in the "My Diary" tab with a graph and a calendar. As the player progresses he is awarded "certificates" and "ribbons" for maxing out the difficulty of a game or completing the entire training in the application." » Spb Mobile Shell 1.5 For Pocket PC Reviewed!
"With the latest Spb Mobile Shell, it provides a more user-friendly interface with a whole new makeover for your Windows Mobile device. During the installation, you will now have the selection between 2 versions of the 'Now Screen', 'Classic' and 'Professional'. 'Classic' is identical with the previous version, 1.0 and the 'Professional' can display additional appointments and alarms. Also, as seen in the image above, the 'Now Screen' now also serves as lockscreen. This is indeed a splendid feature as it protects our devices from accidental dialing, which can prove annoying at times. With the new Spb Menu customization implemented, you will now be able to customize your look on your Spb Menu. You decide which menu to publish and which not to publish. With the total control of your Spb Menu, you are able to make your device look neat and tidy. Unlike the previous version, everything is fixed and you are not able to change the looks of the menu, so with this newer version, Spb would like to give us more control to our device's looks." » The Corsair Review For Pocket PC!
"When I first saw the screenshoot, I said to myself, "Pretty!" Installation, as usual, was easy and hassle-free. The title screen itself is amazing. With the sound of the sea as the background music and the sound of a gun firing when you clicked on a button(while at the title screen), the sound effect is just perfect! The 'Settings' menu allows you to adjust the volume of the music and sound. Click any button and you will see a nicely animated button split into 4 pieces due to the 'gunshot'." » Review of The Quest For Pocket PC!
"For the past two months now our whole family - my partner, me and our 10 year old - has been totally engaged with Rwdshift's latest RPG - The Quest. And most rightly so, as this latest release from the people who have been dedicating their skills and efforts for more than five years now to developing serious Role Playing Games for the mobile community (Palm, PPC and Symbian), including the well-renowned Legacy is nothing but amazing. The story begins with a short and deliberately obscure introduction - Hume, the governor of the island of Freymore has disappeared lately, rumors being he is either sick or missing, and as disorder spreads across the small island, Mersant, the king, decides to send a special agent to investigate into the matters. By a strange request of the councillor of the Magic Ministry this special agent has to be you - a new recruit with little skill and no real knowledge of the island. In the tradition of classic role playing games you start your quest by "building" your own character - selecting its gender (male or female), race (out of five options) and special skills. These initial choices of yours would later determine not only your battle tactics (e.g. relying more on magic if you belong to one of the magically inclined races) and some of the story developments and branches, but in some cases (such as that of the undead race - Rasvim) your whole way of living (undead, for example, can not gain regular health points and need special potions to cure themselves)." » Orions: Legend of Wizards Review for Pocket PC!
"According to their web site, Orions uses a powerful particle engine for animation. Now, I have no idea what this means, and I suspect that you don’t either; and it really doesn’t matter. What does matter is that the animation in this game is crisp, smooth, and exceptionally well drawn. Unlike many graphically-rich games, however, Orions does not rely on the graphics and animation to tell the story. In fact, this is a game which would probably be just as interesting and enjoyable with minimal animation and graphics. Orions does not need these graphics, however, it certainly uses them well and benefits from their presence in the game." Read more here:

» SPB Mobile Shell Review on a Treo 750!
"The Now screen, which the program defaults to when you switch it on displays a large clock, weather, date, battery and memory status, unread email and text message indicators, along with network connectivity status. You have a choice between an analog or digital clock face. The main desktop screen, which you can modify in the settings menu, allows you to place your favorite elements in addition to the SPB shell. There are four icons on the SPB shell panel. From left to right appear a battery status indicator, a clock, a weather icon, and a picture dialer icon. This is the default mode. You can add or subtract any item from the Today Settings Items menu for display on this tool bar. I might add that these are large, finger tapping size icons so that there is no need to drag out a stylus for use throughout the shell." Read more here:

» Frutakia review from pocketpcmag.com!
"There has been a number of slot machine games for the Windows Mobile but most where very basic in functionality, graphics display and one that fads in enjoyment very quickly. Frutakia from CrazySoft is one that provides a very clean display, excellent image resolutions and a unique gaming twist that should provide you hours of continued enjoyment. As soon as you load the game, the instruction screen appears that can be easily turned On or OFF. This is not your typical slot machine. What Crazy Soft has done is combined the slots action with some unique puzzle action. The game screen consists of 3 rows and 5 columns of fruits. Your standard SPIN ALL button allows you to start the game in motion. Once you spin the reels, this is where Frutakia becomes very unique. After the spin, if 3 or more fruits do not line up to produce a reward value you have two options. You can SPIN ALL again or move each reel independently either up or down. The only limit to the number of times a reel can be SPUN or moved is based on your life total. A percentage setting allows you to determine how much of your life is used on each SPIN or move. The higher the percentage, the more value is accumulated in your total whenever you macth 3 or more in any straight line. You can combime multiple lines and multiple fruit wins. When you do match 3+ fruits these fruits are scrolled horizontally and replaced with new fruit. Therefore with each winning SPIN or move, the reels combinations change adding to the excitement." » Nero Mobile Review: Bringing real multimedia management to PPC
"Once you select an icon, the application turns into a giant pick list. Unfortunately, I found this not only extremely jarring to be thrown into a list after such a wonderful opening screen, but also nearly unusable. To select an item (for example, to add a song to a play list), you click on it, and it turns a much darker color. In my mind, when an item "blacks out," it is being unselected. This caused me to create a number of empty play lists before I realized exactly what was going on. The pick-list menu system also has a lot of wait time on devices with slower processors. If we’re going to spent this much time waiting for a list to appear, Nero should have maintained the 3D interface with icons to display if the file is music, video or other. (Note: Although Windows Mobile does not display file extensions and instead uses icons to identify each file’s format, Nero Mobile reveals each item’s file extension and does not use icons at all.) Even better, it would have been nice to see album art or a snippet of the video. Scrolling through a 3D list of my music and videos would have been a far more welcome experience than the text list Nero Mobile provides. Finally, I was surprised to find that the application could not automatically scan my device for files that will play in Nero Mobile." Read more here:

» A better Calendar? Papyrus put to the test for Symbian
"On running Papyrus, you can cycle through three views of your Calendar data, 'Grid', 'Month' and 'List'. These are all on the right soft key - which is normally reserved for back/exit in the style guide. My suspicions are that because Papyrus is a multi platform application this is (a) leading to a lot of bloat and (b) the soft keys are following the Windows Mobile style guide rather than Series 60. Sigh. The Grid View presents you a week on a single page. And one of the biggest advantages of Papyrus over the built in S60 Calendar is the font size. The default is small, and that means that, even showing two columns, you’re able to see enough of a diary entry to make sense (or at least jog your memory). You can also see the default colour scheme. ‘Today’ is show in yellow, green is the weekend, and blue is your cursor. Left and right advance the cursor per day, while up and down will skip a whole week. It’s fast, if not entirely intuitive." Read more here:

» TomTom Navigator 6 Review
" Upon initial startup, Tom Tom 6 looks nearly identical to Tom Tom 5, but in fact, Tom Tom 6 offers a number of improvements in both functionality and usability. You notice the differences right at the startup – namely, the program now starts up quite a bit faster than before (around 10 seconds versus the older startup that took about 30 seconds). The installation process has been simplified - it can now be done by simply inserting the memory card (MiniSD) or DVD and following the prompts. Device activation hasn’t changed; you send in your Device ID and get back an activation code which youenter into your PDA. It’s probably the hardest part of the whole process, and it isn’t very hard at all. There have been enhancements to the 2D display mode. You can now select either “heading up” (the only choice in version 5) or the new “north up” mode. As has been mentioned on this site before, this means that you can now actually use the program as a pedestrian without having the direction constantly trying to spin and adjust to the direction the GPS “thinks” you are going." » Review of update packs (AKU) for Win Mobile 5.0
" Updating and enhancing of any operating system are the things that seemingly will never stop. Groundbreaking changes get introduced in case a company is about to shift up the version of its OS, like it happened to Windows Mobile 2003 upgraded to Windows Mobile 5.0. However, when various fixes are many, but at the same time they cannot constitute a new version, already existing operating system obtains a suffix, indicating its advanced capabilities – for instance Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. Minor tweaks tend to pop up frequently and aim mostly at patching up actual version of operating system. In Windows Mobile’s case such updates go by the name of Adaptation Kit or Adaptation Kit Update (or simply AKU abbreviation, which we will use throughout this review) – they usually patch up existing bugs and enable several new features. Each newly released AKU pack retains fixes found in previous versions of AKU, so in order to emphasize the most crucial fixes carried by AKU, the company sometimes turns to Feature Pack (FP) term, adopted from S60 platform. Significance-wise, Nokia S60’s FP and Windows Mobile’s AKU are on a par with each other, thus FP term applied to Windows Mobile has more of a marketing move rather than actual necessity in it.Read this very interesting article here:
