» Most smartphone consumers looking to buy iPhone 3G, says report
"A great proportion of current smartphone shoppers have already set their minds on the iPhone 3G, says RBC Capital Markets. The investment bank says it ran a survey of some 3,600 members of its Technology Adoption Panel in the aftermath of June 9th's 3G announcement, and found that of those planning to get a smartphone in the next 90 says, 56 percent wanted the new iPhone. RBC notes that this contrasts with a study conducted in March, in which only 35 percent were expecting to buy a new iPhone. In the June results, another 25 percent said they expected to buy a 3G "sometime in the future," more than twice the amount of a similar figure from March. Interest in Apple smartphones is also said to be at least twice that for any other company, including rival Research in Motion, whose BlackBerries attracted only 23 percent of the TAP group. The lower shop price of the iPhone was cited as the main reason for interest, favored by 67 percent of the potential buyers. 3G broadband came in second at 63 percent, while 47 percent chose GPS, 35 percent picked enterprise e-mail, and 20 percent wanted third-party software.More broadly significant may be that the number of people wanting to buy any smartphone has jumped by 10.5 percent, a figure which may reflect a larger potential market. The iPhone's TAM (Total Addressable Market) share is expected to shoot from its 2007 amount of 0.3 percent to 1.7 percent in 2009." via electronista.com

» Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta to Launch July 15th
"We’ve seen Opera 9.5 and Mozilla 3 roll out in the past month. We were really expecting for the mobile versions of these two great browsers. While Fennec from Mozilla will be available somewhere in September, Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta will be launched on July 15th. Simply go to the official site, download it and try it on your mobile. While we have already seen Opera 9.5 mobile versions to work on the HTC Touch Diamond for example, that wasn’t the official Mobile 9.5 release. The guys at Opera want to deliver a browser that will fit with all smartphones out there, which might take some time. So go ahead and try it. It’s a great browser and it simply has to do good on any mobile phone. And in case you were wondering, yes it will be both Symbian S60 and Windows Mobile compatible." via mobilewhack.com

» Faster Google search for Symbian S60 smartphones now available for 8 countries

"Back in February we announced a new search shortcut for Nokia smartphones. We've been really pleased with the uptake and with the very positive reaction it's received from the Symbian community. Even though we launched it in the US, we saw some very interesting usage patterns -- people all around the world were downloading and using it. Of course, Symbian phones are popular almost everywhere. So we're now releasing an international version of the search shortcut for those of you in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia and the UK. Nokia smartphone owners in these countries can now enjoy 40% faster search and get Google search results from their own country. It's a free download. Just add it to your phone now by going to the URL for your country using the phone's browser and then choosing the download link for Search. The download and installation should only take a minute or so and you'll be good to go. Happy searching!" via googlemobile.blogspot.com |

» The State of Open Mobile OSes!!
"Open operating systems, for most folks, means that the operating system is essentially free. The average computer user knows that Linux is free, as in beer, while Windows costs money. The case is the same for mobile OSes although, until very recently, the idea of purposely using an open OS has been a fairly nebulous concept. To be clear open mobile OSes have been around for years, starting most prominently with the QTopia project that ran on ARM hardware found in many PDAs and phones. The Linux kernel plays well with almost any platform, making it ideal for small installations." Read more here:

» Sony Ericsson abandons BeiBei and Paris
"With the leaked product pages, the Paris aka P10 might have come this close to an announcement along with the other five cell phones that saw daylight on June 17th, but looks like that is not going to be the case. The P10 along with the touchscreen G702 (BeiBei) will be shelved indefinitely, with no hints at manufacturing or further development of these two devices, although a limited release in Asia might be a possibility. What’s the reason you ask? Sony Ericsson blames it on us, bloggers, reviewers, and industry watchers for tearing those two cell phones apart, and mobile-review.com in particular for one really hard-hitting review on the G702. Anyways, let’s hope Sony Ericsson has something else cooking in its labs other than the Xperia X1, as this just put a huge hole in its smartphone lineup, which might take a long while to fill up." via mobilewhack.com

» Symbian turns 10 years old, launches time capsule website
"Symbian is celebrating its 10 years anniversary. On Symbian site there is an interactive timeline you can quickly browse through the Symbian history. It is fun and brings back a lot of memories. I am surprised that Nokia 3650 is not there. That is the first Symbian phone I ever used in 2003. It is the first MMS phone in US (?) and the first Java handset with MMAPI support. After that I remember Sony Ericsson P800, P900, Nokia 6600, Nokia 9500 and a few newer E Series and N Series. The reason that I pick Symbian (Nokia S60 in particular) device as my personal cell phone is that it is the best developer handset you can ever get. With Nokia’s upcoming N96 for example, you can develop software for it with: - Java (CLDC/MIDP,eSWT)
- Symbian C++ and Open C
- Python
- Flash Lite 3.0
- SilverLight Mobile
- Nokia WRT Widget
That is just the official supported list. With 3rd party solution, you can add Visual Basic .NET and other options to the list. If you are a developer who are interested in mobile development, there is no other device can even come close to Symbian’s openness and wide language options. As a normal user, more development options for developer means more cool, open and free applications available.Symbian is experiencing some growing pain now. Palm OS, a mobile platform with almost the same age as Symbian, is dying and rebirthing. I am glad to see Symbian OS is still very strong and innovative. I wish it the best." via wendong.ngphone.com |
» Steve from allaboutsymbian Reviews the Newly Announced Nokia E71
"In some ways the E71 is the iPhone's nemesis - using almost the identical dimensions in a totally different way, for a totally different set of users. The iPhone excels at media consumption (Music/photos/video/web), while the E71's strengths are in media creation (typing documents, Office work, camera, camcorder, and so on - the usual Nokia/S60 strengths). Both devices can do most of what the other does, just not as well. The attempted crossover is evidenced by the iPhone 2 platform adding enterprise features while the E71 now plays DRMed WMA music, etc. Then there are the starkly different form factors. And the different target markets (personal vs company use). Add in the elegantly-simple- but-not-as-deep UI of the iPhone compared to the useable but-you-need-to-be-fairly-tech-savvy-to-find-everything approach for S60 on the E71, and I can only emphasise once again that they're polar opposites." » Review of GSM/UMTS-smartphone Nokia 5320 XpressMusic
"Since it’s a music-heavy device, mounted along the left edge are three music buttons that allow for one-touch availability of the music player and Say and Play feature. Further down is the microSD memory card slot with its seal sitting flush with the flush, which makes it quite challenging to open. I liked the pattern on the side, it makes the 5320 look not so flat, makes it more eye-candy. The phone feels robust in the hand, doesn’t creak at all. On balance, I couldn’t find anything to fault it on as far as overall look and feel goes." Read more here:

» Three Nokia handsets leaked – two N-Series, and the 5800 Tube
"Nokia's 5800 Tube was seen some months ago, now, it makes another appearance, along with the N85, and the N79. The N79 looks to come in two colors – titanium or white, and bears a resemblance to Nokia's N82, except it doesn't sport the fingernail-style keys of the N82. The screen looks to be about standard for an N-Series device – 2.4”. Next, the N85, which has the dual-slide form-factor of the N95/6. It comes with a five megapixel camera, much like the N95/6, but with the addition of an Xenon flash. It also dumps the Nokia N96'S stand, in favor of a lens cover. It should be available in your choice of black or white." Read more inside..

» Apple iPhone 3G versus Nokia N95 8GB at allaboutsymbian!
"The original N95/iPhone battle may have moved onto new stomping grounds, but it's still a battle royal. Between strength and subtlety, between functions and form, between features and ease of use. Both devices are either aimed at totally different markets or aimed at the same market, depending on who you talk to. But the fact remains that the Nokia N95 8GB (now six months old) and the Apple iPhone 3G (available on July 11th) are still two of the most desirable smart devices anyone can own." Read more here: |
» Picasa now customized for Nokia Symbian S60 and translated into 36 languages
"Joe optimized Picasa Web Albums for the iPhone and Zak made it shine on Windows Mobile. This made me wonder about Nokia phones. Ever since S60 3rd Edition came out, phones like the Nokia N95 have had good web browsers. Why not give Picasa Web Albums on S60 some AJAXy goodness, with faster browsing and a slicker user interface as well? I investigated what it would take to make our existing design work on S60 and it turned out to be really easy! And since I'm Dutch, I also wanted to view this interface without needing to switch my account language to English. So we had it translated into 36 new languages. We also gave the toolbar an overhaul, adding simpler to understand icons. You can now get this new version of Picasa Web Albums on all S60 phones using a WebKit-based browser, as well as iPhone using Safari and Windows Mobile 6 Professional using Internet Explorer. As an added bonus we've also added support for Windows Mobile 6 Standard. Finally, based on requests we've had on this blog, we've added a zoom feature for the iPhone. When viewing a photo that was uploaded to Picasa Web Albums in high resolution, just tap on the zoom button -- the one with the magnifying glass. This will take you to a page with a high-resolution image where you can use those wonderful finger gestures for zooming and panning around in the zoomed area.Head to picasaweb.google.com to give it a try, and be sure to let us know what you think! There's a good chance now that your phone and preferred language are supported." via googlemobile.blogspot.com

» Nokia E71 – marvel for the chosen
"The Nokia E71 comes with generic S60 specifications, including all applications and extras available with the latest-gen devices. It also features some welcome additional feats, such as the Dictionary application and Maps 2.0 along with a GPS-receiver which automatically means that now it’s a GPS-ready smartphone. But its main selling point is the fact that it’s a QWERTY-enabled device with real thumbboard. All in all, it hasn’t gone far from the E61 on many fronts. Its buttons have been diminished in size, but only a fraction, so the tactile experience hasn’t changed a bit – the E71 is still a breeze to text with. To make sure I carried out an experiment that proved to be a mistake in a way. I handed the E71 over to a friend of mine, who works for a large company and has been an avid user of his E61 (email for the most part). " Read more here:
