» Access Garnet VM Review at brighthand!
By Dimitris S. | Published 06/20/2008 | Palm OS , Linux , Linux Software Reviews | Unrated

"Users of traditional Palm OS handhelds have had a hard go of things the past few years. Not only have Handspring and Sony folded up shop, Palm itself has switched its entire focus to making smartphones. For a long time it seemed that handheld users were destined to stick it out with their Palm TX or Zire; something that works, but is definitely behind the curve of technology trends. Some users wouldn't stand for such things and moved on to different devices, either Palm OS smartphones or handhelds running another operating system. But then Access came along and released a Palm OS Garnet emulator for Nokia's Internet Tablet devices. Now, those who don't want a smartphone have a device they can run their Palm OS software on." » First look: Mozilla Fennec takes browser fight to handhelds
By Dimitris S. | Published 04/10/2008 | Other , Linux Software Reviews | Unrated
"The performance gains that are visible in the benchmarks are quite apparent in regular day-to-day use. We tested Fennec on the Nokia N810 with a number of web sites (including our own) and found that it is noticeably more responsive than MicroB. Performance and a small memory footprint are obviously important for effective mobile browsing, but those are only two pieces of the puzzle. The Mozilla Mobile initiative is also working on creating flexible and intuitive user interfaces that will make Firefox a winner on handheld devices. The Fennec prototype, which is based on one of Mozilla's touchscreen mobile interface proposals, includes the first small steps towards achieving that goal. " Read more here:
» Nokia Navigation Kit for N800 Internet Tablet Review
By Dimitris S. | Published 07/14/2007 | Linux Software Reviews | Unrated

"We tried out the GPS device initially in a small, rural town in Northern Nevada. In an open Jeep, it gained a location fix quickly, and kept us entertained with odd, synthesized Britishisms mixed into the directions. "There, that wasn't really so bad now, was it?" its default "Christopher" voice might announce, as we neared our destination.
However, the N800's screen fared poorly in direct sunshine, even turned up all the way, a setting bound to drain the battery very quickly. And, we worried about how long the receiver and N800 might survive in the Jeep, let alone on a bicycle or backpack. Neither unit is sealed in any way against dust and water infiltration, making them pretty impractical in any kind of camping situation -- arguably something a couple of plastic bags might fix. Additionally, the N800's battery life will be much, much shorter than that of a typical handheld GPS, which can go all day."

"The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved a navigator by Mitac called MDPNA 470T, which will be released under Medion brand.
This GPS navigator is equipped with a touchscreen LCD, an expansion slot for SD/MMC cards. It’s possible to use the navigator as a media player. Besides Medion MDPNA 470T has an integrated support of Bluetooth." via mobile-review.com

» Previewing the Motorola ROKR e2 JavaLinux OS
By Dimitris S. | Published 10/10/2006 | Linux , Linux Software Reviews | Unrated
"Motorola is testing out their innovative new operating system in the ROKR e2, but how does this menu setup stack up against the competition? Is this JavaLinux system an improvement over the old interface? PhoneScoop got their dirty little hands on an e2 to fiddle with, and in the end, they conclude that it is "still basically the same OS", despite being slightly more user friendly and having a couple of extra features. As far as the rest of the specs are concerned, the ROKR e2 rocks a 1.3 megapixel cam, FM tuner, expansion slot, USB 2.0, and Bluetooth."
